Programmes that take cells — usually from a patient's own follicles — multiply them outside the body, and return them to the scalp in the hope of restoring or creating follicles.

No cell therapy for hair loss holds a marketing authorisation from any medicines regulator, and "hair cloning" has been reported as imminent for twenty years. The closest thing that exists: since 2024, Japan permits one autologous cell therapy at specific licensed clinics under its regenerative-medicine framework — a sanctioned procedure, not an approved product.
